FIRA - CAPITAL OF SANTORINI

Fira, the capital of Santorini is the island's most populated town. This is where the majority of restaurants, bars, clubs, shops and hotels is found. The town is built on the rim of the caldera, with picturesque houses, constructed on different levels with an amazing view of the volcano. In the narrow cobbled streets of Fira you can select from a great variety of souvenirs, t-shirts, carpets, pottery e.t.c. The famous "Gold Street" is full of jewelleries offering a great opportunity for investment in "Golden Memories".

In the Caldera of Fira, the most famous restaurants of the island are found, with a unique view and excellent quality and service.

Here is the cable car and the famous donkeys which you can ride for an unforgettable ride. In Fira you will find Post Office, Police, Port Authorities, Hospital, Taxi Station, Busses, Pharmacies e.t.c.

SIGHTSEEING

The Venetian building of Ghisi in Fira, where is the permanent exhibition of painting, sculptures, manuscripts, charts and generally material concerning Santorini and the other islands of Kyklades.

The Archaeological Museum, with Theraic vessels and other finds from the excavations in the island.

ENTERTAINMENT

There are many restaurants with fresh sea food etc., on the top of the cliffs, too, where you will have the chance to the view to the volcano and the unique sunset. Also, in the square of the town there are fast foods.

There are many bars, discos, nightclubs.

A festival of Classic music in August and September. There is also a cinema.

On the highest mountain of the island there is a little church, Prophitis Elias, where, on the 20th of July takes place the traditional festival, with folk songs and dances.

Fira are located to the western side of the island, the entire town on the cliffs. From there you can go by the traditional way down to the old port, Scala: On a donkey, going down the hundreds of stairs, or - if you prefer - by the funicular.


If you have a boat, you should make an excursion to the opposite islet of Therassia. Or by the boats that make daily itineraries from Scala. In Therassia live about 200 people. You will go up 250 stairs from the port to the village with the white little houses. Due to the volcanic origin of the islet, there are not coasts where you can go to swim - they are precipitous.

Also, from Scala leave boats to daily excursions to the volcano. At Nea Kammeni you will have the possibility to go to the crater of the volcano, where comes out sulfur dioxide. You will swim at the beach beside to Nea Kammeni, in the sea with green of sulfur warm waters.

LOCAL PRODUCTS

Try the famous wines of Santorini from the vineyards planted on the volcanic black soil of the island and the local fava (pea puree).
